Working with Peru
The UK and Peru enjoy a wide-ranging relationship covering many areas of common interest. The traditionally strong commercial and trade partnerships continue to flourish (the UK is the second largest foreign investor in Peru), but are today accompanied by growing cooperation on issues such as climate change, security (drugs and organised crime), sustainable development and defence. The ever-increasing number of British visitors to Peru also plays an important role in the relationship; around 67,000 British citizens came to Peru in 2008.
Momentum in the relationship has been sustained through a programme of inter-government and parliamentary visits, including Baroness Ashton and Kim Howells, FCO Minister of State, in May 2008 and John Ashton, the Foreign Secretary’s Special Adviser on Climate Change in April 2008. 2007 and 2008 saw visits to the UK by Peru’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, and the Environment, Dr Antonio Brack.
